It's Discotastic! It's Discotronic!

Dimitri From Paris
Astralwerks
2000

I got a new CD and I can’t stop listening to it. As a mater of fact, I’m having trouble listening to any thing else. And when I say anything, I mean anything: the radio, my inner child, other people, police officers, and even the TEEvee. It’s just that good.

This CD is the newest mix by Dimitri from Paris, "A Night at the Playboy Mansion." This is one of his best. And that’s saying something. Dimitri is the man who brought us "Sacre Blue", which is an album that I have yet to hear a bad comment about (it’s out of print, so stay the hell away from my copy). All one has to do is look at the cover of this disc and you can tell just how sweet it will be. The cover, in case you didn’t notice it at the top of this page, has a naked chick with an afro concealed behind a playboy chair. Oh, it’s gonna be a party alright.

And boy is it a party. As I told Sketchy shortly before he obtained it for himself, this disc is all you need to have a kickin’ party. I suspect that if I cranked this album up and opened the door, Evil Robots HQ would soon be inundated with many, many party people- including the sexy ladies. Oh yeah.

Alright, not let me explain Dimitri’s particular brilliance, the genius at had. Dimitri kicks it old school. This album is totally discotastic. But more specifically, discotronic. Dimitri has mixed up some killer tracks all with as strong disco overtone, yet with a slight house flavor. The two styles of music, of course, are not incommensurable. It works better than one might imagine. This mix far exceeds the quality of most of your standard DJ mixes. And it’s mostly because of the beats.

In this mix, Dimitri has gone the disco route, and the beats are authentic. The bass is not all "thump-thumpy" and tedious as dance-oriented music can tend to be. There are actual baselines. At times I would even ascribe genius to the bass. It rolls around and really gets your ass moving. It’s hard to sit down while listening to this (but I can do it because I am EXTREMELY lazy).

Besides the beat factor there is everything else. There are absurd disco-esque vocals mixed with some very current sampling. It’s enough to make me crazy. Crazy in a good way. I suspect if one were to obtain a time machine and travel back to 1979 or so and play this in a club, that person would be anointed some sort of king- maybe even achieve deity status. It’s just that good.

But the truly amazing thing about this mix is that it won’t necessarily offend the haters of disco. There are many out there and they need help, but that is for another time. Why is this mix suitable for all ears? Because Dimitri is a genius, that’s why. Dimitri has a highly selective ear. The tracks he has selected for this particular mix are not actual disco tunes. Only one track was actually lifted from the seventies. As a matter of fact, the rest of these tracks were all recorded within the last 3 or 4 years. That might be why it works out so well. If someone where to mix a bunch of old disco tracks together it might sound like crap. Might? Probably definitely, more like it. Dimitri has found a bunch of highly dance-inducing and funky tracks that have enough of a disco feel to pull of calling this mix "A Night at the Playboy Mansion." It is worthy of the title.

This disc is a must have for any party. Or just in general. It is a must have. It is an instant party and highly infective. It works on so many levels, so I must insist that you, specifically, obtain it.
