2006: 7th Anniversary SpectacularNetflix Mania
Hey, look, I finally got around to writing half-assed reviews for all the
DVDs I've watched since March.
A History of Violence,
2005
This is fucking good. I'm not saying anything else. Just watch
it.
The Ice Harvest, 2005
The
first of many John Cusack movies I watched in this installment. It wasn't as funny
as I wanted it to be, as I don't seem to remember much about it. Cusack and Billie
Bob Thorton play small time mobsters, or something, pulling a caper and things
go bad and some people die. Also, there are jokes.
Walk
the Line, 2005
Those kids did a better job playing Johnny and
Cash that I expected. This movie was not the disaster it could have been. In fact,
it was pretty good.
Better Off Dead, 1985
A
classic from the 80's.
First Descent, 2005
Some
people jump off of helicopters onto the top of mountains and snowboard down. They
are crazy.
Jarhead, 2005
War is
frustrating and about staving off boredom just as much as it's about spilling
blood. And officers are jerks. Got it.
Everything
Is Illuminated, 2005
In this film, Liev Schreiber makes an impressive
directorial debut. This is the story of a weird American Jew, played by Frodo
What'shisface, traveling to Ukraine to discover his the story of his grandfather's
escape from the Nazis. It's quite a gripping and effecting film.
Grosse
Pointe Blank, 1997
A hit man at his high school reunion? I love
it! It's an 80's movie make in the 90's, with a killer soundtrack. You can't go
wrong with a movie that's got "Armageddon Time" by the Clash on it's
soundtrack.
The Comedians of Comedy: The Movie,
2005
Good stuff. Patton Oswalt is a funny dude. So are his buddies.
The
God Who Wasn't There, 2005
This wasn't as good as I wanted it
to be. If it had been more about academic research than about the filmmaker deciding
that church sucks, it might have been a lot more interesting. It was clearly about
one guy and his grudge.
Riding Giants, 2004
I've
reviewed this before, I think. But seeing as how I'm off to Hawaii 2 days after
this publishes, I thought I should prepare with a quality surfing documentary.
Bill
Hicks: Sane Man, 1989
Bill Hicks is pretty
funny, but a bit to much of an intentional iconoclast, I think. Oh, look at me
and the "dangerous" things I say!
Match
Point, 2005
Woody Allen made a thriller and it was pretty good.
The best part is the ending.
The New World, 2005
I
was very excited to see this, as I am a fan of Terrence Malick and his beautiful
movies. However, this one was more beautiful than interesting. Though it does
show Virginians to be the buttholes we all know they are.
Zero
Effect, 1998
This is a terrific detective story. Bill Pullman
plays a crazy genius super private eye. He figures everything out, and meth helps.
It's a great whodunit, and funny to boot.
Fantastic
Four, 2005
This, by far, be my expectations. There was some
good superhero shit in it and it was genuinely entertaining like a summer blockbuster
should be. The funny parts were funny and the action pars were actiony.
Fun
with Dick and Jane, 2005
This wasn't what I expected at all.
I thought it was going to be a cute honkey crime spree. As it turns out, this
movie is mostly about corporate greed and a family trying to survive an Enron-style
crash. It was fairly endearing, and I especially liked the "special thanks"
at the beginning of the credits to all the asshole CEOs who made this movie possible-
by name. A nice touch. Also, Tea Leoni is an underrated comedic actress.
