A few words about Fonzie

Happy Days may well be the greatest thing ever seen on television. I’m not kidding. And before you start laughing at me and deriding my ability to think, let me explain. Happy Days has Fonzie.

There are several ways of looking at this issue. One way would be to call Fonzie a magical being. This would place Happy Days in an alternative universe (much like the Banana Splits), which is entertaining to think about, but lacks the comedic genius that I think is inherent in the show. Sure, it’s fun to think about a universe in which a guy can bang on a juke box or snap his fingers and things happy- but that is kind of absurd if you think about it.

The alternative is completely absurd. The alternative is, as a result, far more funny. I also think it’s genius. Here it is- Happy Days is a joke. Duh, you say. I’m not done. Here is how you must watch Happy Days: Fonzie is a colossal nerd and everybody is putting him on. Think about it. Then think some more. Then watch an episode or two. You will suddenly have a new found love and appreciation for the show. You will see Fonzie think he is the coolest guy ever. You will then see how THE ENTIRE POPULATION OF MILWAUKEE, WS is humoring him to see how far they can go. You know that inside they are full of laughter. It’s absurd, and it was a stroke of genius for the writers of Happy Days to pull it off.

I can’t stop laughing. Watch Happy Days like I do and you will laugh ‘till you stop too.

As a matter of fact, about a month ago I was watching a three-parter in which the Cunninghams go out to Colorado to save some uncle’s dude ranch. Fonzie came along. So did a disproportionately large amount of Milwaukee- including Arnold. I think that the gang wanted to continue their joke- but more importantly, they knew that The Fonze would act like an idiot. Big time. And they were right. Fonzie was showin’ off left and right. It was some of the most unimpressive hot doggin’ that I have ever seen. But everybody played along so as to increase the funny. It work. Oh, and then some girl pretended that she was pretending that she didn’t like Fonzie because she was pretending that she really did like him- to confuse him. It was hysterical. She really like Richie, but then said she didn't'’ because she was trying to get in with Fonzie- some 40 year old in a leather Jacket riding a dirt bike. Oh, the humor is too much!

I suggest that everybody tune right into Nick-at-Nite or TVLand or whatever and watch as much Happy Days as possible. Keep in mind what I have said. It may take a few moments to adjust to this new Happy Days World View, but it will be worth it. It just might well change your life forever.
