Is anyone else bothered by this?

I only know what little I read in the newspapers, but I am bothered by the overabundance of name-dropping by the current Presidential candidates. The name I am constantly hearing is "God," or as he is also known, "Christ." Our Most Forgiving and Eternal Lord in Heavan has been on the lips of both Democrat and Republican presidential candidates. While I may be very supportive of church-goers, I do not like the trend.

If the last three or four decades have taught me anything it is that God is that last person you need on your side when running this big country. I have noticed that lawyers, memory lapses and kick-ass press secretaries are the keys to survival in modern America.

God has not only been kicked around in public by our Supreme Court, he is regularly foresaken behind closed doors(as we have found out.) Why, then, do men and women find the need to take his name in an attempt to earn the trust of voters?

Are the voters stupid? Maybe. I would guess that they are as well educated as anyone else.

Are the candidates blasphemers? Probably. But taking the Lord's name in vain is much better for the general public to see than trailer-park-trash and widows spilling the beans about alleged sexual encounters.

This is American politics. God will always be in the Election cycle vocabulary. For that there is no cure. I would like to see, however, a candidate who is not affraid to sleep in on Sunday and skip church. I would vote for the guy who, when asked if he was religious, could proudly say, "Not really, but I do that God for the freedom be that way, and God Bless America!"

(Please keep an eye out for the January 2000 presidential endorsements!)
